Hurricane Season

According to yahoo.com, hurricane season is coming up, which means that the people living along the Atlantic and Gulf Coasts need to get ready to prepare for the next big storm. The problem I have with all of this talk going on is that no is doing the correct solution. People are saying they want to rebuild the coast and put up bigger and stronger barriers to protect it, but that is not going to work. The right thing to do is not to build homes and businesses right on the coast because this prevent another storm like Hurricane Sandy to happen and cause as much destruction as it did. Before all these houses were built on the coast it used to be swamp land. This means the land was already dangerous to live on. All we needed was for a giant storm like Hurricane Sandy to destroy it all.

One way we can protect our beaches and the people living there is to create better protection which would be bigger and stronger barriers. If the people living there make the improvements I am sure that this will better protect the shores and help save people’s homes. In places like New Orleans and parts of Florida they have big barriers that block the water from coming far into the land. In the north we need the same thing. Hurricanes do not come up north that regularly, but when they do they are very dangerous storms that can do some damage to homes. With these new big barriers to protect the coast from flooding, the people who live down there will feel better protected from storm surges. These improvements can easily be made and can really help protect our shore lines and people’s lives.

Another way people can be better prepared and protected from storm surges and hurricanes is that simply, we do not build out of the coast anymore. One reason why the storm washed up houses and completely flooded these islands is because they are so far out from the normal coast that they are practically in the ocean. If the homes were to move back inward more towards the coast the water would not flood the entire town or city. The shores and the waves are so strong out there because it is farther out into the ocean on a normal day. When a storm like Hurricane Sandy hits the waves will overpower the entire island and the whole town will be flooded. To prevent this from happening again people need to build more inward into the land and not right up against the ocean, or else their houses will get flooded again.

Lastly, another way people can become better protected from another super storm like Sandy is that authorities can instruct people who are living there to how to act if another storm was to suddenly hit. Since this is the north and hurricanes to not happen as often as places in the south, we still need to be prepared if another super storm comes. People can be told where to go and what to do if another storm happens again. People can be told what to bring in case of emergency. If all these strategies work successfully, people will be able to leave the coast in an orderly fashion without any trouble.

In conclusion, storm surges are a serious matter here in the tri-state area. Over the past few years this area has seen two super storm hurricanes and a couple of giant snow storms. All we need is for another super storm to hit and not be better protected like in the past. If we can just follow some of these suggestions, the coast will be protected from any storm that Mother Nature throws at us.
